The codebreaker by walter isaacson6/29/2023 Further, there is a clear cause-and-effect chain linking these scientists. It connects Gregor Mendel in the late 1850s to Emmanuelle Charpentier in 2011. The line stretches through geographies and generations, as Ishino worked in Japan, Mojica in Spain, and Doudna in Berkeley. coli, to Francisco Mojica, who discovered these sequences were immune mechanism CRISPRs, to Doudna, whose focused on uncovering how CRISPR works. Isaacson stresses the point by drawing a line from Yoshizumi Ishino, who first noticed spacer sequences in E. Though the book is partly a biography of Jennifer Doudna, it is also an ode to all the scientists who made accomplishments in gene editing possible. It’s not merely a matter of semantics scientific collaboration forms the backbone of most of the important discoveries detailed in the book. The word “collaboration” crops up almost 80 times in the text of The Code Breaker, besides showing up in references and acknowledgements. Out of the Silent Planet by C.S. Lewis6/29/2023 He makes learning a language seem easy and even fun. While the author is doing all of this, he finds time to give other SF writers lessons on how to deal with characters encountering alien languages - his protagonist is a philologist, a scientist of language. But he plays great games with fun aliens (giving each species its own characterization), plausible plantary environments, and weird (sometimes too weird) alien vegetation. Yes it's a simple plot as most good vs evil stories are. Principles of morality, ethics, and honesty are a major componant of the story. Not for anti-Christians although open minded atheists could enjoy it Lewis fills the story with theology, spirituality, and deep philosophical considerations that point toward a God without being preachy - it's just from a spiritual perspective. The characters are fully realized (his hero even has some beliefs and attitudes he disagreed with) although having some cliche aspects, an intentional tool Lewis used in emphasizing the story's theme of GOOD against evil. Written in the 30's and poor science fiction (some of the science in it is wrong even by the knowledge of Lewis's day), this novel is incredible in imaginative detail and original concepts as well as in conveying real wonder, not just sense of wonder. Original, complex, not middle of the road Journey of the center of the earth book6/29/2023 Then! When we get to the really cool part of the story that really is awesome science fiction, it’s barely talked about. I understand that this is (a) science fiction and (b) written over 100 years ago, but it got to the point where the only way I was able to enjoy the story was to pretend I knew nothing after 8th grade science. I struggled through this book because all I could think for the first half of the novel was “Nothing….is…happening.”Īnother thing I struggled with was the science. It took 100 pages for them to get to the volcano, walk around, and run out of water. Journey to the Center of the Earth was incredibly slow. Verne's imaginative tale is at once the ultimate science fiction adventure and a reflection on the perfectibility of human understanding and the psychology of the questor. In his quest to penetrate the planet's primordial secrets, the geologist-together with his quaking nephew Axel and their devoted guide, Hans-discovers an astonishing subterranean menagerie of prehistoric proportions. The intrepid Professor Liedenbrock embarks upon the strangest expedition of the nineteenth century: a journey down an extinct Icelandic volcano to the Earth's very core. Why We Sleep by Matthew Walker6/29/2023 Nevertheless, our understanding of sleep as a biological process has remained relatively mysterious compared with advances in our understanding of disease processes and other key requirements for life such as eating and reproduction. Sleep is detectable in every animal studied, from insects to worms to humans and even sharks – despite what you may have heard elsewhere. Amma intercepted these notes and kept them from Maali. He does not learn until much later that Dada has in fact written him consistent letters following his departure. Over the course of the following years, Maali holds a grudge against his absent father. When Maali is still a young boy, his father leaves his mother. Maali's childhood is therefore defined by these conflicts. His parents have a tumultuous marriage and are constantly fighting. Maali Almeida grows up with his father and mother, Dada and Amma, in a house in Bambalapitiya, a neighborhood of Colombo, Sri Lanka. The following summary relies upon a linear, streamlined mode of explanation. The author takes creative and inventive liberties with point of view, structure, form, and conventional notions of the novelistic plot line throughout. However, because the novel is a work of magical realism, the narrative setting is also defined by the main character Maali's journeys in the Afterlife, a realm referred to as the In Between throughout the novel. The novel is set in 1980s Colombo, Sri Lanka. Shehan Karunatilaka's novel The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida is written from the protagonist Maali Almeida's second person point of view. The following version of this book was used to create the guide: Karunatilaka, Shehan. A discovery of witches book 46/29/2023 I could no longer remember when I'd developed this strong resemblance to her. When I looked into the mirror, my mother's face stared back. I jerked on the jacket to see if that would make it fit any better, but it was too much to expect from inferior tailoring. My clothes seemed confining, and I felt self-conscious in them. It was a familiar routine, and this was my habitual outfit, but neither proved comforting today. Sarah blamed it on pent-up magic and promised that the regular use of my power would keep the static electricity from building and make my hair more obedient.Īfter brushing my teeth, I slipped on a pair of jeans, a fresh white blouse, and a black jacket. Like most witches, I had a problem getting the shoulder-length strands to stay put. It was straw blond and unruly, despite the ministrations of a hairbrush. There was no time for my usual trip to the river, or even for a run.Ĭutting my morning ritual short, I showered and then drank a scalding cup of tea while drying my hair. At some point I'd kicked off my right slipper, leaving my foot trailing over the edge of the bed. Four hours later I woke up on top of the duvet, clutching the phone.
